Summary: Accused had plead guilty to the offence of manslaughter after being charged with the stabbing of her common-law husband - Historically turbulent relationship - Both parties had been drinking heavily the night of the stabbing - History of substance abuse - 14 months spent in custody while awaiting trial. Court considered the following aggravating factors: use of a lethal weapon, more than one stabbing action involved, and the stabbing occurred within a spousal relationship - Substantial period of incarceration was considered necessary in order that the Accused might have an opportunity to receive long-term treatment to assist with her rehabilitation.
