A Notice of Appeal was received on September 16, 2013 from Cenovus Energy Ltd. in relation to the August 16, 2013 decision of Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development to issue Administrative Penalty No. WA-10/06-AP-NR-13/06 under the Water Act to Cenovus Energy Inc. in the amount of $367,385. The penalty is for the alleged unauthorized diversion of water from SW 30-91-4-W4M, SE 21-90-6-W4M, 13-21-90-6-W4M, NW 31-90-6-W4M, 10-34-90-6-W4M, 5-2-91-6-W4M, 15-21-91-7-W4M, NE 21-91-7-W4M, 4-1-94-10-W4M, and 14/15-32-93-9-W4M, in relation to the Steepbank Oilsands Exploration Program, in the area of the Steepbank River, Municipality of Wood Buffalo.
The Board scheduled a mediation meeting for December 12, 2013. Mediation meetings are not open to the public. On December 8, 2013 Cenovus withdrew their appeal. The Board cancelled the mediation meeting scheduled for December 12, 2013, and based upon the withdrawal of the appeal, the Board discontinued its proceedings and closed its file.
